My family moved to Shelby County in 1972 and I attended Pelham High School after Valley Elementary.  Then I received both my B.S. in Biology and Doctorate in Optometry from UAB. My wife, the former Kim Kallenbach of Childersburg, and I built a home in Chelsea to raise our children near family and friends and in a place that shares our hometown values. This is home to our family and we care very deeply about Shelby County.  As a parent of three kids that have attended Chelsea schools, son of a former Pelham mayor, brother to a Pelham City Councilman, family to several area teachers, owner of Hayes Eye Center and Chelsea MedPlaza, county commissioner and civic and church volunteer, I get to see Shelby County from many perspectives on a daily basis. I have always felt blessed to have grown up here.  Shelby County will always be a part of who I am.

I have served our community in a variety of ways over the years. I have coached baseball and basketball for Chelsea youth teams. Hayes Eye Center, which has grown to nearly 20,000 patients, and I have donated personal and corporate resources that helped support multiple area schools, youth teams and civic organizations for over 25 years. My office walls are lined with plaques and photos of many of these teams.  I built Chelsea MedPlaza to provide other health care providers and businesses a place to work in our community.   And I have been a sideline volunteer for Chelsea High School and Middle School football teams since before my children were born.  Kim and I are founding members of Morningstar United Methodist Church, where I have served in multiple leadership roles.  I am the founding president of the Chelsea Kiwanis Club and a member of the original organizational committee to form the town of Chelsea.

After over 20 years of working, mostly behind the scenes, for organizations representing students, universities and health care within state and federal politics, I was appointed by Governor Bob Riley to the Shelby County Commission.  Not long after that appointment, the housing market crash threw the country into a recession and my financial skills were put to the test in both my optometry practice and my new role as Shelby County Commissioner.  With the help of a conservative and cooperative group of commissioners and an excellent staff of county administrators and employees, we have returned to a nearly $96 million budget.  Those nearly 15 years of experience and “weathering of the storm” has prepared me well for whatever comes our way in Shelby County.  I am a very fiscally conservative person, but also believe that Shelby County has to continue to be proactive in trying to bring more business and jobs to our communities in order to improve the quality of our county, which is consistently ranked among the best places to live in Alabama.

Please join me as we take the next step for Shelby County in the general election on November 3rd .  I would sincerely appreciate your help and your vote!
